The Dubai Metro Blue Line, a landmark addition to Dubai’s world-class public transport system, is set to commence operations on September 9, 2029, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced. This significant project aligns with Dubai’s commitment to efficient, sustainable urban development and celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro, which first opened on September 9, 2009, at exactly 9:09:09 PM.
The RTA has awarded the Dh20.5 billion contract for constructing the Blue Line to three prominent companies: Turkey’s Mapa and Limak and China’s CRRC. Spanning 30 kilometers and featuring 14 stations, the project underscores Dubai’s dedication to infrastructure excellence.
Designed to serve 200,000 daily riders by 2030, with a projected increase to 320,000 passengers by 2040, the Blue Line will help alleviate traffic congestion by up to 20% along its routes. The line will provide seamless connectivity between Dubai International Airport and key urban areas such as Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City 1 and 2, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Dubai Festival City. Travel times along the Blue Line will range between 10 and 25 minutes, offering efficient transit solutions to residents and visitors.
The Blue Line is a vital component of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which envisions a “20-minute city.” This transit-oriented approach aims to ensure that 80% of essential services are accessible within a 20-minute journey.
The new metro stations on the Blue Line will showcase a sleek, futuristic design. In contrast to the fully enclosed stations on the Red and Green Lines, the Blue Line stations will feature a smooth, curved structure. The main platform will be enclosed within a large, oval-shaped design, while symmetrical, curved side structures will house the exits.
The Blue Line is expected to have a significant impact on Dubai’s real estate market. Properties near the metro stations are anticipated to appreciate in value by up to 25%, with areas like International City, Silicon Oasis, Ras Al Khor, Mirdif, and Al Warqa poised to see double-digit increases in property prices and rentals. Residents in these areas have expressed optimism, highlighting the cost-saving and convenience benefits the Blue Line will bring.
